In Honor of Dr. Joan Heywood
Ted. would like to take a moment to celebrate the life of a great educator. Dr. Joan Heywood was a second grade teacher at Burgess Elementary School in Sturbridge for 30 years, and she embodied the values that the Tantasqua Education Foundation hopes to sustain and support. While she passed away on September 2nd, she left behind hundreds of grateful students and appreciative parents who benefited from her skill and dedication to the art of helping children fulfill their highest potential. Besides serving as the Second Grade Team Leader, Dr. Heywood was a Director at the Center For Learning, Inc. in Southbridge, a past Board Member of Trinity Catholic Academy in Southbridge, and recently a finalist for the Massachusetts State Teacher of the Year Award. As Burgess principal and longtime colleague Dan Carlson said, “Dr. Joan Heywood was truly a lifelong learner and an educator who was beyond comparison. She not only touched the lives of thousands of children, she was a mentor and friend to many colleagues at Burgess throughout her career.”
